Jan Swammerdam (12 février 1637 à Amsterdam – 17 février 1680 à Amsterdam) est un naturaliste néerlandais, pionnier de l'usage du microscope en biologie. Il a ainsi découvert les différentes phases de la vie d'un insecte - œuf, larve, nymphe et adulte.

Jan Swammerdam publicó varios tratados, pero pasó desapercibido y no obtuvo reconocimiento hasta la publicación de sus descripciones y dibujos por el médico holandés Hermann Boerhaave bajo el título de The Book of Nature (El Libro de la Naturaleza) (1737-1738) tras su fallecimiento en Ámsterdam el 17 de febrero de 1680.
