He led the team that invented the first widely used high-level programming language and was the inventor of the Backus-Naur form (BNF), the almost universally used notation to define formal language syntax.He also did research in function-level programming and helped to popularize it.

Il est directeur de l’équipe qui pour la première fois crée un langage de programmation de haut niveau, le Fortran, et est le créateur de la forme de Backus-Naur (BNF).
