Shah Jahan era musulmán, como podemos ver en sus construcciones, especialmente en el Taj Mahal. Estos dos primeros matrimonios no son matrimonios de amor sino de razón, y rompen el compromiso que ya unía en 1907 al joven Shah Jahan, todavía llamado por su nombre de "Khurram", con Arjumand Bano Begum, la nieta de un noble persa, que solo tenía 14 años en ese momento.
