Jazz drummer and bandleader Ralph Peterson Jr. died March 1, 2021, of complications from cancer. He was 58. Peterson was born on May 20, 1962 in New Jersey. His father and uncles were drummers, and Ralph started playing at age 3. He also played trumpet in his high school band.
17 de may. de 2021 · Ralph Peterson Jr.—who came to prominence in the 1980s as one of jazz’s swinging, improv-driven “Young Lions”—succumbed to cancer on March 1. He was just 58 years old. Peterson’s commitment to bebop—as well as being an avid student of the history of drumming—earned him a long-time spot as the second drummer in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.

He started on drums at age 3, but it was as a trumpeter that he made his way into the jazz studies program at Rutgers University.
