She replaced Anita O’Day in the Stan Kenton Orchestra in 1945, and had a hit with the million-selling Tampico, Kenton’s biggest-selling record.
June Christy was an American singer, known for her work in the cool jazz genre and for her silky smooth vocals. Her success as a singer began with The Stan Kenton Orchestra. She pursued a solo career from 1954 and is best known for her debut album Something Cool. After her death, she was hailed as "one of the finest and most neglected singers of her time."
June Christy secured a place as one of the most successful and respected cool jazz singers of the 1950s with her intimate, intelligent, and artistic style. Christy rose to prominence as a singer for the Stan Kenton Orchestra, replacing Anita O’Day in 1945.
