In 1967 wilde Art Neville een eigen groep oprichten. Hij vroeg aan George Porter Jr., Joseph (Zigaboo) Modeliste en Leo Nocentelli om mee te spelen en zo ontstond de groep The Meters. Nadat ze hadden samengewerkt met Allen Toussaint en Lee Dorsey mochten ze zelf een plaat maken. Ze maakten vele hitsingles, zoals "Sophisticated Cissy," "Cissy Strut," "Ease Back," en "Look-Ka Py Py".

In 1969 the Meters released "Sophisticated Cissy" and "Cissy Strut", both major R&B chart hits. Cyril Neville, Art Neville's brother, joined the band in 1975 as a percussionist and vocalist for three of their albums for Reprise/Warner Brothers. After twelve years and ten studio albums, The Meters disbanded in 1979 due to business problems.
