Richard Austin Freeman (* 11. April 1862 in Marylebone, London, England; † 28. September 1943 in Gravesend, Grafschaft Kent, England) war ein britischer Kriminalschriftsteller. The pioneering creator of the inverted detective story, R. Austin Freeman was a popular Edwardian author of novels and short stories featuring Dr. Thorndyke, a pathologist-detective. Well-liked by readers of Sherlock Holmes, Freeman’s detective and mystery tales offered an innovative approach to the genre, selling thousands of copies on both sides of the Atlantic.

R. Austin Freeman's masterpiece The Eye of Osiris, published in 1911, but perhaps written earlier, seems paradigmatic of the Golden Age detective novel. This seems somewhat startling, because most historians echo Howard Haycraft in assigning a pioneering role to the development of the Golden Age to E.C. Bentley's Trent's Last Case , published in 1913, but apparently written during 1910-1911.
