Best known for his portrayal of Cornelius in Planet of the Apes, McDowall went on to work regularly in films, TV, and on stage from childhood until his death.

He was 70. McDowall died at his home in the Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles, said Dennis Osborne, a friend who had cared for the actor.
