Jackson DeForest Kelley was born on January 20, 1920, in Atlanta. He was the second son of Clora Casey and the Reverend Ernest David Kelley.

Finally, when both Kelleys fell ill, Carolyn with a broken leg that never healed and DeForest with the cancer that would ultimately claim his life in 1999, Smith was on hand as their caregiver.
