Założycielami zespołu byli Ray Thomas i Mike Pinder, do których dołączyli Clint Warwick, Graeme Edge i Denny Laine. Grupa połączyła elementy muzyki klasycznej z rockiem. Wydany w 1967 drugi album "Days of Future Passed" przedstawił ogromną zmianę stylu muzycznego grupy.
