I am sitting in a room is a sound art piece composed in 1969 and one of composer Alvin Lucier's best known works.. The piece features Lucier recording himself narrating a text, and then playing the tape recording back into the room, re-recording it. The new recording is then played back and re-recorded, and this process is repeated.

Vespers (1968) Around the year 1967, Lucier got interested in echolocation. One day he accidentally met someone who worked for a company producing Sondols, hand-held pulse oscillators designed for “ boat owners, acoustic engineers, and the blind.”. Lucier bought a few of them and envisioned a piece for echolocation.

Lucier read a text into a microphone. Attempting to smooth out his stutter, he began with the lines, “I am sitting in a room, the same one you are in now. I am recording the sound of my speaking voice.”.
