Biografia. Bubka iniziò a dedicarsi al salto con l'asta all'età di nove anni. Nel 1978, quindicenne, si trasferì a Donec'k con il suo allenatore Vitalij Petrov.Fu conosciuto dal mondo dell'atletica nel 1983 quando vinse ai Mondiali di Helsinki con la misura di 5,70 m.. The 22-year-old pole vault prodigy soared to the world record at the Paris International Track and Field Meet, shattering his previous mark of 5.94m, set in Rome in August 1984.
Pole vaulter Sergii Bubka burst onto the international scene when, as a 19 year old, he won gold at the inaugural World Athletics Championships in 1983. Over the next 14 years, he won all five World Championships, and is still the only athlete in any event to win six. Something usually went wrong for Bubka at the Olympic Games.
