Each Holy Cross student’s curriculum consists of common requirements (which can be fulfilled by selecting from a wide range of courses), a major, and freely elected courses. The cornerstone was put in place with great solemnity on June 21, 1843 and on the second day of November, with six students aged 9 to 19, the first classes were held. The College held its first Commencement in 1849, of which the valedictorian was James Healy, the son of a slave. Within three years, the enrollment had increased to 100 students.
Holy Cross is one of a select group of colleges (fewer than 100) that meets 100% of each student's demonstrated financial need at the the time of admission. Students whose families have a total income of $75,000 or less and reasonable assets will receive a full tuition grant.
