Instead it started a long nightmare in which three million Cambodians would die in the “killing fields.”. The Killing Fields is an epic story of friendship and survival produced by David Puttnam (Chariots of Fire) and directed by Roland Joffé (The Mission).

Cambodian genocide, systematic murder of up to three million people in Cambodia from 1976 to 1978 that was carried out by the Khmer Rouge government under Pol Pot. Immediately after World War II, the Americans and the French fought wars against communism in Korea and Vietnam, respectively.

The largest of the killing fields was Choeung Ek, which sits on the outskirts of Phnom Penh and today serves as a monument to all those who died – and those who survived.

Deze plek, ook wel Choeung Ek genoemd, was ooit de plek waar de Rode Khmer onder leiding van Pol Pot de gevangene van de Tuol Sleng (S21) gevangenis doodde.
