S. E. Hinton grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the city in which The Outsiders is set. Writing helped her to process her experiences and find refuge from her troubled home life. During Hinton's teenage years, she wrote two books that were unpublished before she wrote The Outsiders, which was published when she was 19 years old.

S. E. Hinton published ‘The Outsiders,’ a novel she began writing at age 15 and published at age 17 in 1967.At that time, the idea of a teenager writing fiction for her peers was a rarity. Most of the literature handed down for high school students to read had, in Hinton’s estimation, nothing to do with the lived experiences of teenagers in her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The original 91 minute cut of 1983's The Outsiders. The book by S E Hinson adapted well to the screen. Coppola did, of course, an excellent job directing and the casting was perfect.There is a longer version through different editing techniques for those viewers who wanted more clarity in the fights, the reasons, the importance of the threat of reform school.
