This 2 CD release is great value for those wanting an introduction to this top notch band fronted by the man who penned Tuxedo Junction. Yes, there are some softer 'swing era' tracks, but the overall sound is as much Basie as it is Miller. Somewhat (now) neglected, Erskine Hawkins was one the big band 'giants' of the late 30s and 40s.
