While most other bands were playing pure and visceral hardcore, the collective, led by frontman David Lowery, infused bits of pop, country, blues, Norteño music, ska, and even European folk, all while maintaining the scene’s core DIY mentality.

When I heard Camper Van were releasing another album so soon after 2013's La Costa Perdida, I figured the songs would be second-tier leftovers.What a happy surprise, then, that El Camino Real is even stronger than its laid-back predecessor. These songs have some bite to them, lots of hooks, and plenty of David Lowery's smart, wry lyrics.
