Karamu house has been serving the community for over 100 years! Today, karamu’s mission is to produce professional theatre, provide arts education, and present programs for all people while honoring the african american experience. Hosted on Tuesdays and Thursday schools and organizations receive a tour and workshop on the history of Karamu.
Karamu House brings together adults and children (of all races and ages) together every year through its arts academy and education programs, including dance, drama and theatre, and vocal performance. The Karamu Arts Academy provides fall and spring semester classes, as well as a summer intensive program.

Karamu was also a contributor to the Harlem Renaissance, and Langston Hughes roamed the halls constantly. Reflecting the strength of the Black influence on its development, the Playhouse Settlement was officially renamed Karamu House in 1941. Karamu is a word in the Kiswahili language meaning “a place of joyful gathering”.

Dance Class at Karamu House, 1964, 1957. Karamu Theatre, listed as the "oldest black theater company in America" by the African American Registry , began in 1917 with a series of plays with interracial casts, which were produced by Russell and Rowena Jelliffe in the Neighborhood Association settlement they founded two years earlier on East 38th Street in Cleveland, Ohio.
