Abnormal heart rhythms (QT prolongation) may also occur.

Symptoms include abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and flushing. Avoid alcohol and products containing propylene glycol while taking metronidazole.

Published data include more than 5000 pregnant women who used this drug during pregnancy (many during the first trimester); 1 study showed increased risk of cleft lip (with or without cleft palate) in infants exposed in utero, but these findings were not confirmed.

Loading and maintenance doses should be infused IV over 1 hour.

The usual adult oral dosage is 7.5 mg/kg every six hours (approx. 500 mg for a 70-kg adult). A maximum of 4 g should not be exceeded during a 24-hour period.
